Where to get IVF drugs from?

#1 Post by SueC1976 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 2:17 pm

I tried searching as I'm sure people have asked this before, but couldn't find the info. Just wanted to know if it's best (cost and stress) to get ivf drugs from Care or a pharmacy? I was told to budget £1500 for drug costs per cycle. Does that sound realistic based on experience? Thanks!

Hi Sue,

I wondered this too, will follow this post to see any responses. Fingers crossed somebody knows the answers.

Also very random, just saw your comment on another post about first appointments and saw you were at CARE Nottingham the ame day as myself and my partner. I believe we crossed paths on the way out at the desk when we were paying for treatment! Small world.

Good luck with your journey! All the best.

Hi SueC1976 and SandS,

I don't have the answer to your question about where to buy from but I have seen on other threads that people have said Asda are the cheapest. I have been meaning to ring them all week to check prices I will try and remember to do this today and will let you know the outcome. I have had two previous cycles so have prices to compare to and obviously would like to save any money I can this time.

With expected cost based on mine £1500 would be enough but everyone is different and I think I had quite low doses of everything.

I wish you both lots of luck with your cycles xx

Hiya
Asda sell fertility meds not for profit so the best place to go.

I was NHS funded but that didn't cover the clexane I needed. If I had of got them through healthcare at home attached to the clinic 20 injections would have cost around £130 I paid £72 from Asda. It's a big saving.

I went round all the major pharmacies and asked them to price up my prescription.

Asda is definitely the best.

Hi both,

I have rung Asda and based on my previous prescription I would have saved about £100 each cycle but they don't supply the needles or the sharps bin so would need to find out how to get those and how much they would cost.

I hope this helps xx

Thanks CTRT and DaisyDotty!

Looks like it might be Asda then! Needles and syringes and sharps boxes can be bought cheaply enough on Amazon.

Steph and Stacey - we were at Nottingham the same time. Best wishes for your first cycle too! So inconsiderate of them to be closed over Christmas when we want to get going!

Asda!! They should prescribe pre-filled syringes, shouldn't need to buy separately.

Hey all. ASDA is 100% the place to go. Not only to they provide all drugs at cost but they've also split my prescriptions so I can purchase as I need. For example clexane (which is a pre filled syringe) comes in boxes of 10 which lasted me 10 days so I only re-ordered more if I got past day 10 in my 2ww. In total Asda saved me about £450 in my last cycle compared to healthcare at home (but my estimated drug cost is more like £2200)
Needle wise, there are lots of options online. Just make sure you're getting the right sizes for needle length and the amount they hold.
Sharps boxes wise, online or if you have a decent GP they might do them on a NHS prescription for you.
Good luck to you all. :)

Thanks for posting this question as I was wondering what others thought too. My friend said she saved about £300 on her latest cycle by going to ASDA. I guess that's where I'll be going.

I'll be starting over New Year, so have to get everything in place before everywhere closes.

Good luck.

It was acouple of years ago now but I got mine from Sainsbury's just because it was a trek to Asda. The needles and sharps box were supplied by the clinic. Good luck. X

Hi All,

I've ordered my prescription from ASDA, it was less than I was expecting. Does anyone know if menopause and cetricide(?) Will come with needles?

What size sharps bin is recommended? I'll be doing 2 or 3 injections a day for about 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all
Sorry coming late into the thread. If you have a good GP he may give an NHS prescription even when you are privately funded.

All the best to those of you starting in 2017. May it be our year of baby smiles

My GP gave me the Metformin and Norethisterone on prescription, but not the injectables.

I've just collected all mine and they all come with needles. Got a sharps bin in Superdrug this morning for£1.53.

:-) it's getting real now.

Hey there. This post is great help. I'm hoping to start treatment in Feb and was also wondering if buying meds elsewhere gives a cost saving. Sadly my stingy Gp wouldn't even do initial investigative tests for my partner and i so we have to pay care for them so any bit of money saving advice is appreciated. Good luck everyone xx

Hi Ladies

This is my second cycle and I got my prescription from CARE yesterday, it has increased significantly due to me having GonalF this time around. I paid £1000 give or take on cycle 1. This cycle its closer to £1400 so I decided to do some investigating myself and looked away from Healthcare at Home. I sent my prescription to Stork based in West Yorkshire, so not far from me (I found them recommended on another forum) They have come back today with a quote of £880 for the exact same drugs, syringes and sharps box. I did double check with them that the quantities etc were correct and they are.

I am going to get a quote from a couple of other places, ASDA being one of them. I am kicking myself that I didn't shop around on cycle 1 especially as we are self funded. :x

Hope this helps

Wow! That's a huge difference! Thanks for sharing. I'm also interested to know how asda compare for you - I'm also self-funding.

I am so pleased I found this thread. I am just starting my IVF journey and have received my quote from the clinic, so thought I would do some research as every penny counts! I contacted Stork and they are going to save me about £200, so thanks to Jane for mentioning them!
